GME President And Curator Jon Gartenberg Gives A Virtual Keynote Address For Seminar On Jonas Mekas Sponsored By The Bezalel Academy Of Arts And Design In Jerusalem, Israel

Accompanying the exhibition on Jonas Mekas held at the Mamuta Art and Research Center in Jerusalem (organized with the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design), as President of Gartenberg Media Enterprises, and former curator and archivist in The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film (MoMA), Jon Gartenberg was invited to give a virtual keynote address. Alongside art historian Inesa Brasiske, Jon addressed the legacy of Jonas Mekas, the universally acknowledged godfather of the American avant-garde, experimental, underground, and independent cinema. He spoke extensively about the influence Jonas Mekas has had on Jon’s own professional career, as well as the numerous encounters that he enjoyed over the past 50 years working with Jonas Mekas, his films and the institutions that he created.

This semester, Gartenberg Media introduced GME Streamline, a new section on GME's website for the distribution of films and videos that we are now making available as Digital Site Licenses (DSL), in addition to the occasional presentation of viewable streams on Streamline's title pages. We are offering this service exclusively to the academic community for the streaming of moving image works via the university’s own intranet or closed circuit network, in order to further enrich curricula as well as for library and research use.

This array of works comprise films by directors James Benning, Josef von Sternberg and Eric Von Stroheim (US), Dziga Vertov , Lev Kuleshov, Sergei Eisenstein, and Michail Kalatozov (USSR), and Martina Kudláček, Michael Pilz, and Canadian transplant John Cook (Austria), as well as Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand). Ideal for academic study and research, these DVD Editions contain multitudes of extras as well as bilingual texts in English and German about the respective films and their filmmakers.

GME PRESENTS THE FILMS OF JAMES BENNING NOW AVAILABLE AS DIGITAL SITE LICENSES

GME Streamline is extremely proud to present an extensive collection of 14 of James Benning’s films (comprising 6 DVD editions), as well as CIRCLING THE IMAGE (2003), a documentary on Benning’s meticulous investigation of landscape locations, camera position, and shot duration. These collected works comprising 16mm films span a 30 year period from 1977 (11x14) through to 2007 (RR), and have been mastered in high quality digital format by Edition Filmmuseum - Vienna. Benning’s born-digital films date from 2009 (RUHR) through to 2014 (NATURAL HISTORY) and exemplify Benning’s shift from working with film grain to pixels. We now make each of these films available as DVD/DSL bundles on an exclusive basis to the North American university market.
