Over the course of his half-century professional career, photographer Jack Mitchell documented a unique history of artists in the fields of dance, theatre, music, the fine arts, film, and television. Mitchell would have turned 100 years old this year. In recognition of the centennial of this creative and historically significant photographer, GME now offers a series of readymade exhibitions throughout 2025 that showcase Mitchell’s iconic photographs. In celebration of Black History Month, we present Harlem, Hollywood, Broadway: African American Legends, which features 36 silver gelatin and color photographs of noteworthy African-American artists and performers taken by Mitchell over the span of his five-decade career. This show first opened at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama in January 2020 and is currently available to galleries, museums, and other cultural institutions both in the U.S. and abroad.
Highlights from this wide-ranging exhibition include portraits of such notable artists as Cicely Tyson, Oscar-nominated actress of stage, screen, and television; Judith Jamison, dancer, choreographer, and former Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater; Tony-winning Broadway veteran Ben Vereen; Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Roberta Flack; and global pop icon Whitney Houston in her first professional photoshoot. Among others included are images of singer, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte and Oscar-winning thespian Morgan Freeman.
GME aims to further elevate the significance of Mitchell’s career within the larger artistic, cultural, and public spheres. Exhibitions such as Harlem, Hollywood, Broadway convey the breadth and diversity of Mitchell’s oeuvre and affirm his stature as one of the chief photographic chroniclers of 20th-century artists and cultural figures.
