Now Playing in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room: Francis Ford Coppola's DEMENTIA 13

As a programmer at The Museum of Modern Art, Adrienne Mancia was an advocate of progressive “New Hollywood” filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola who, in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, subverted the moral and aesthetic traditions (and limitations) of the studio system by producing thematically and stylistically challenging work influenced by European cinema, the American avant-garde, and the countercultural ethos of the era at large. This month in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room, GME presents Coppola’s debut feature film DEMENTIA 13 (1963), which screened in MoMA’s November—December 2023 tribute to Mancia.

Powell, Pressburger, and Sonbert: How RUDE AWAKENING Was Influenced by The Archers

On the occasion of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger, a month-long retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art showcasing the work of directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, GME reflects on Warren Sonbert’s 1976 polyvalent montage film RUDE AWAKENING, which was directly inspired by the legendary British filmmaking duo. Powell and Pressburger — the creative partnership behind such classics as THE RED SHOES (1946) and BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) — produced and distributed their work under their company “The Archers,” which was denoted at the beginning of their films with a logo featuring an arrow landing in the center of a bullseye. Sonbert explicitly echoes Powell and Pressburger’s logo in RUDE AWAKENING by starting the film with a brief shot of a young man shooting a bow and arrow, prior to his montage footage commencing.

Jon Gartenberg Introduced Francis Ford Coppola's DEMENTIA 13 on November 29th for MoMA's Adrienne Mancia Tribute

On November 29th, 2023, at 6:30pm, GME President Jon Gartenberg introduced the Director’s Cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s feature-length debut, the Roger Corman/American International Pictures-produced 1963 horror film DEMENTIA 13, at the Museum of Modern Art. The film screened as part of the museum’s tribute to former programmer Adrienne Mancia, who passed away last year and who was a close friend and colleague of Gartenberg’s. Jon Gartenberg to Present King Vidor, Henry King, and Francis Ford Coppola Films At MoMA As Part of Adrienne Mancia Tribute

On Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, at 1pm, GME President Jon Gartenberg will introduce King Vidor’s THE JACK-KNIFE MAN (1920) and Henry King’s THE SEVENTH DAY (1922) at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of their Adrienne Mancia tribute, which runs from November through December 2023. Later that day, Gartenberg will also introduce the Director’s Cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s first film, the 1963 AIP horror DEMENTIA 13.
