September 2023 Roundup of Screenings Related to GME's DSL, DVD, & Blu-ray Offerings

Happy Autumn from Gartenberg Media Enterprises! As we enter October, we’re looking back at a myriad of screenings from last month, in New York City and beyond, featuring films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. GME-associated artists were well-represented in September — from pioneering filmmakers like Ida Lupino, Jean-Luc Godard, Jose Val Del Omar, Maya Deren, and Man Ray, to contemporary artists like Karel Doing, Rose Lowder, and Lav Diaz. The work of Warren Sonbert, which is exclusively represented by GME, was also screened in various venues in September.

Films by Mark Street to Screen at Millennium Film Workshop

On Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, at 7:30pm, six recent observational films by Mark Street will play at the Millennium Film Workshop in the program Street Life: The Personal Cinema of Mark Street. Street is a longtime friend of GME’s. Jon Gartenberg programmed numerous films by Street — including FULTON FISH MARKET, A YEAR, and ROCKAWAY — while working at the Tribeca Film Festival from 2003 to 2014. Gartenberg once remarked of Street’s work: “The globe is Mark Street’s cinematic canvas, onto which he impresses shimmering reflections and lyric montage sequences.”

Notes after Long Silence - On Austrian and American Structural Film at Millennium Film Workshop

Notes after Long Silence - On Austrian and American Structural Film at Millennium Film Workshop

In the early 1960s, a number of filmmakers emerged in the United States and Europe to produce remarkable films that challenged any previous formal tendency in avant-garde filmmaking. The Structuralist filmmakers—including Peter Kubelka, Tony Conrad, Paul Sharits, and Kurt Kren––arranged their shots according to mathematical principles, attempting to produce non-narrative and non-illusionist films to oppose the cinematicapparatus. Similar to the advent of Minimalism in painting and sculpture, structural films insisted on shape, and their content was minimal and subsidiary to the outline.

NOVEMBER 27 (Sat.) STEPHEN DWOSKIN

Stephen Dwoskin, born in Brooklyn, New York, contracted Polio at the age of seven and was left disabled. After studying art with de Kooning and Albers, he attended NYU and the Parsons School of Design. He soon discovered experimental cinema and was influenced by the transgressive underground films of Jack Smith and Ron Rice. This led to the publishing of his book, FILM IS. He began making his own films and moved to Britain in 1964 where he has lived ever since. He was one of the founders of the London Film-makers Cooperative. His features, beginning in the 1970s, attracted much attention and critical acclaim, along with strong controversy.

THE SUN AND THE MOON, US PREMIERE (60min. 2007)

This video is some kind of enforced domestic cinema: an excessive video film in which the maker does not spare himself. Short of breath, in the absence of the spoken word. "The Sun and the Moon, a film fairy tale, is about two women's terrifying encounter with 'Otherness' in the form of a man, abject and monstrous, and for them to either to witness, accept or partake in his annihilation. All are caught in their own isolation and are fearful of the menace that has to be met. The film, as a personal interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, enciphers concerns, beliefs and desires in seductive images that are themselves a form of camouflage, making it possible to utter harsh truths." -S.D.

NIGHTSHOTS (1,2,3) (33min. 2006-2007)

Shot utilizing the "night vision" function of a digital video camera, these films deal with one person's perspective on sexuality, with the visual distortion and off-kilter color balance of the low-light camera adding to the film's unique point of view. Nightshots 1,2,3 was screened in competition at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival. "The first three of a series of intriguing personal and erotic relationships, exploring in the intimacy of darkness, and transformed by the colour play of the night light." -S.D."Nightshots (1, 2, 3)" (2006-07)
