As we enter October, we’re looking back at a myriad of screenings from last month, in New York City and beyond, featuring films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. GME-associated artists were well-represented in September — from pioneering filmmakers like Ida Lupino, Jean-Luc Godard, Jose Val Del Omar, Maya Deren, and Man Ray, to contemporary artists like Karel Doing, Rose Lowder, and Lav Diaz. On Sunday, October 8th, and Monday, October 9th, 2023, James Benning’s new film ALLENSWORTH will screen at the New York Film Festival in the Currents section. Benning remains one of our most significant, formalist avant-garde filmmakers, and GME is proud to be the sole distributor of his films to the North American university market. Man Ray and Abel Gance Films To Screen at NYFF 61

At this year’s New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center and playing in New York City from September 9th to October 15th, 2023, films by Man Ray and Abel Gance will screen in the Revivals section, which spotlights “important works from renowned filmmakers that have been digitally remastered, restored, and preserved with the assistance of generous partners.” GME distributes on DVD, with Re:Voir Video, to the North American university market, Ray’s RETURN TO REASON and EMAK-BAKIA in the eight-film collection CINÉMA DADA. GME is also proud to distribute Gance’s LA ROUE on DVD, to the North American university market, in conjunction with Flicker Alley. GME additionally distributes Gance’s J’ACCUSE (1919) on DVD with the same label.

Examining family history and turmoil has fueled much of the greatest work of Philippe Garrel (REGULAR LOVERS, THE SALT OF TEARS), whose new film pays tribute to his late father (and regular cast member) Maurice’s background as a puppeteer. Simon (Aurélien Recoing), the head of a puppet troupe, works alongside his children, all played by Philippe’s actual children: son Louis (Louis Garrel) and daughters Martha (Esther Garrel) and Lena (Lena Garrel, making an auspicious first appearance in the Garrel family filmography).

1962 to 1964 was a pivotal moment in the evolution of American arts and culture, especially in New York City. These years, crucial to the development of Pop, Minimalism, and performance, saw the emergence of a new generation of radical artists, as well as venues that gave their iconoclastic work a home and a context. Movies, meanwhile, were undergoing a transformation of their own: the rise of a truly independent cinema, of works unencumbered by the medium’s aesthetic conventions and commercial imperatives.

TRAIN AGAIN (Austria, 2021, 20 min, 35mm) is screening with Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong’s feature COME HERE at 9pm on Tuesday, April 5th.

Coinciding with the centennial of his birth, Film at Lincoln Center and The Jewish Museum in New York, are mounting (beginning this week) screenings and exhibitions dedicated to the life, art and legacy of Jonas Mekas's 70-year career. GME is concurrently celebrating the legacy of Mekas’s storied filmmaking career. In addition to the DVD editions of The Films of Jonas Mekas that GME has long distributed to our institutional buyers, we have recently also made available high quality downloadable .mp4 files of his films for digital site licenses (DSL) to our university clientele, including the recent release of REMINISCENCES OF A JOURNEY TO LITHUANIA (1972) (included in 3 JOURNEYS TO LITHUANIA).

Thai visionary Apichatpong Weerasethakul drifts through dream states in this Palme d’Or-winning jungle ghost story in which a dying man reconnects with the spirit of his dead wife as he journeys through his previous lives. Suffused with references to Thai mythology and the country’s classic cinema, this lushly surreal, profoundly mysterious work unfolds with the otherworldly aura of a trance. It is being presented as part of the program Danny Glover and Louverture Films, a Series Embodying the Work of an Actor, Activist, and a Groundbreaking Production Company on Dec. 3 and 4.
